.cape gowns arent bad afterall

Its interesting how things really do come and bite you in the back. I used to dislike those vintage gowns with those chiffon cape cause it feels too feminine, restricted and glamourized for someone with a part tomboyish character like me. Sometimes when i do see it in vintage shops, theres no chance that i would try it on cause in my mind, ive already banished it to the "clothes i dont touch" category.

But since once when i saw it on some lady, or should i say a girl in her 20s who looks elegant and poised wearing those cape vintage gowns, i immediately had a change of heart. She wore the dusty pink dress with chandelier earrings, with hair loosely tied up in a french twist, light make up and ballet flats. To de-glamourize it, she wore it with black leggings.

So i finally got my hands on one of these cape gowns for S$3.50 on ebay. Ha! A full length lightly pleated dust pink gown with lace rims on the cape. But, ive decided to chop it up to knee-length or slightly above, so i can give it more daily wear instead of restricting it to those important functions or any of the like. With some leggings or tights and sneakers, im ready to go.

.unexpected sale surprise

Sales should be the time when i get excited, when i use a full day to trot around orchard and go through all the shops with that red final clearance board up front. That adrenaline which goes through you when you find something that you like gets slashed a few times and its only a small fraction of the original price. I get some of my friends saying they dont fancy sales cause you have to squeeze and tunnel your way through all those racks with a dozen others. But hey wheres the fun?

But the downside of sales, you get all those odd, or should i say large sizes like 12 onwards. Skirts are a no-no since my waist is the only small part of my large size body. So... call me desperate, but since i always like to get something out from a sale, i turn to dresses. Flowy dresses. Sometimes they look amazingly good when you get it a few sizes larger... yea well since i have no choice this time.

So what i got this time was this burnt orange/pink sleeveless trapeze dress from topshop. Size 14. Yea its big and stuff, but then it looks mmhmm...sexy (thats what i think) cause it looks airy and empty.

I think i would go for a colour block look with purple tights and yellow shoes. Or, mustard tights and green shoes. Or white tights and red shoes. I will post all my looks up once i get down to it.

Yea... i love sales...

.faded out

I've been trying forever to look for a pair of high-waisted super skinny faded jeans to pair it with my zara girls white tiered dress to go for the white tone look. White dress, faded jeans, white shoes. You get the idea. But with all those "weird" coloured (red, green, turqoise....) skinny jeans being all the rage now, its quite difficult to get proper first hand faded jeans. Even when you have Cheap Monday doing high-waisted jeans, they dont do faded colour. And even if they do, i want a touch of a seasoned-handed-down-jeans. So yeah... so much for getting a new one.

So i went to my other faithful 2nd hand store House of Japan and scoured over 2 full rails of $5.00 one-off vintage jeans. I took 3 pairs in, and the one which i thought could most probably be the one turned out unright while the least favouritised one went home with me.

So heres my Lawman faded jeans which i most probably would get a lot of wear out of it. The only downside is its a tad too tight. First things first, i gotta lose a bit of weight.

.shades of green

I still remember those times when i saw my mum watching black and white films, and i thought gosh! how boring it is to look at stuff in a single colour.

But wait. When did a single colour turn interesting? Apparently when the fall collection came a number of outfits in head to toe hues. From Preen came shades of pink, grey... from Emilio Pucci came burnt orange and fuschia pink... while Sonia Rykiel went with grey and navy green...

I have seen a number of blogs i frequent who went with their decided colour and dressed up head to toe in shades of blue and red. So i went ahead with my colour of the moment and decided to go with forest green. My outfit is made up of a 2nd hand dress and green footless tights from topshop. Now now, where can i find shoes in those shades of green......

*i have to do some alterations to the sleeves and thats the reason why the top part of the picture is missing. haha.

.ruffles? oh not again...

Yes. Yet again its about ruffles. Now what have i gotten a liking on this time? This time, its a vintage black lycra dress with 3 layers of forest green crinolin ruffles at the bottom. Its up on refreshvintage.com, the price is slightly steep for me at USD$55 cause you have to top up an extra 20 bucks on shipping. I bet you can get another top with the shipping fees. Lucky for those who is staying at the US and Canada area as they offer free shipping. As for me, its yet another "looking from afar and unattainable item."

.flowers on my skin

As usual, i did my rounds at the salvation army, got a handful pile of clothes, but in the end just decided to go with a single red pleated skirt which i plan to use for my single colour outfit (more on that next time).

So feeling quite reluctant to leave with just an item, i started digging around areas which i seldom do. Hosiery. Actually the reason i dont go to that area is, they only have normal stockings mostly suitable for office ladies. You know... 30 denier stuff in grey, beige...... the norm. But today, i actually uncovered a Givenchy couture stocking. Dont know where it came from, dont know the authencity, but the flower imprints on the stocking looks good enough and its only a dollar, so i decided to leave with it.

It looks like what Alice would wear in Wonderland and Dorothy in Wizard of Oz, fairytalish and cute. If i wanna go full power with the cutesy look, i should pair it with mary janes and frilly dresses. If not, black structured dresses or skirts are on my mind right now.

.behind the scenes of prada

Take it that im bored or i have nothing better to do, but i looked through every tab on Prada's website, and watched every movie available on their website. Its of course much better compared to the stagnant one piece picture in the past. Now you can even download their pdf for their autumn/winter looks.

Back to the movies. You can see every detailed process needed to go through to make a single bag, dress and shoe. Its actually infotainment but much more interesting and mind blowing for me that is. Reason being i didnt know they actually had to cut out the pattern for every single part of the bag and then cut out manually from each piece of leather. Then you have the movie where you say how shoes are made. It actually takes 36 painstaking hours to make a pair of shoe. Then to the clothes, where you have manual work and machine work combined to make a single dress which takes 8 hours. Ironing the hems itself takes up 3% of the whole time taken to make the dress. Wow.

So if anyone like me, is bored or intrigued by stuff like how cheese are made or anything the like, go take a look at the website and the movies available. Im sure you'll be amazed like me.
